Air filters and indoor air quality: match the system first

Understand filter fit, ventilation and the limits of filtration before choosing an upgrade.

Reducing indoor pollution sources and bringing in clean outdoor air are central parts of air-quality improvement. Filtration can supplement them. A portable cleaner serves a room; a central filter works with a forced-air system. Neither removes every kind of pollutant.

Check the required size and allowed filter resistance in your system's documentation. EPA discusses MERV 13, or the highest rating the equipment can accommodate, with professional guidance. A tighter filter that restricts airflow is not automatically a better fit. Keep the documented size and source in My HVAC.

Humidity control, ventilation, UV devices and purification address different conditions. Ask for a specific purpose, compatible equipment, maintenance needs and supporting evidence. This guide does not promise a health outcome or diagnose an indoor-air problem.

Start with the equipment and habits you already have. Routine household dust or recent remodeling alone does not establish a need for duct cleaning. Use the air quality assessment to record observations, see why an option is raised, and choose which discussion items enter your proposed scope.
