Choosing a smart thermostat that fits your HVAC system
Compare useful controls and confirm heat pump, backup heat and communicating-system compatibility.
Smart thermostats can offer schedules, remote control, occupancy features and operating information. ENERGY STAR certification is based on field data, but it does not guarantee a particular saving in your home.
Verify compatibility with the full heating and cooling system before purchasing. High-efficiency equipment may need its manufacturer's controller to keep communicating features. Heat pumps, backup heat and dual-fuel setups need appropriate control configuration.
Compare features you will use, access needs, internet connection and ongoing support. Save your thermostat model and its public manual in the passport. Have a qualified installer check compatibility and settings; do not infer a wiring match from brand alone or a photograph of a closed panel.
Before replacing a thermostat, check whether your exact model already offers the schedule or circulation feature you want. The T6 Pro user guide describes fan modes that depend on system settings; a family name alone does not establish what your device displays. Use the current-thermostat assessment to check its full model, applicable manual and observed controls. Running a circulation fan is different from bringing in outdoor air.
